SEMINAR IN ALGEBRA AND TOPOLOGY
Xi’an Jiaotong University, Department of Mathematics
Tuesdays, 7:00-9:00pm, Science building408(理科楼 408)
There will be a seminar in algebra and topology at Xi’an Jiaotong University each Tuesday evening starting on September 13, 2016. The seminar will be from 7:00-9:00pm in room 理科楼408 on the XJTU Xingqing campus(兴庆校区). The seminar is open to all interested people, including students and faculty at XJTU and other universities in Xi’an.
The first two seminars will be given by Professor John Meakin, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA. Details of the first two seminars are provided below.
Seminar: Applications of inverse automata to algebra and topology.
Time:September 13 and September 20, 2016
Speaker: John Meakin, University of Nebraska, USA
Abstract
Automata are simple mathematical models of computing machines that play a prominent role in several aspects of theoretical computer science and mathematics. In this series of talks we will discuss the notion of an inverse automaton and some applications of these automata in group theory, semigroup theory and topology. In particular, inverse automata can be used to study subgroups of free groups, presentations of inverse semigroups, and cellular immersions between CW-complexes. Relevant background ideas in the parts of automata theory, algebra, and topology that will be needed will be discussed in the seminars.
